This paper explores medieval chronicles, looking for evidence of the reception of the De excidio Troiae, which was considered to be an eye-account of the Trojan War. An examination of a broad sample of manuscripts and published chronicles from France, Italy, Germany, and England indicates that the authority of Dares the Phrygian was never seriously challenged. In the text scholars found information concerning the chronology of the war and its casualties, making it a useful source for the positivist historian. Consequently, only after several scholars had proven it was a forgery was it ejected from the canon of classical authors, in the early eighteenth century
