Le sacrifice dans la littérature grecque de l’époque impériale

Practice, experience and ideology of sacrifice at the time of the Roman Empire are illustrated by the literary sources. The novels insert sacrifices into plots, slipping out the common use of sacrifice, in search of thrilling stories which have also a documentary interest. Aristides shows the gap between the private experience of life and the public practices. He calls attention to gains men may hope from sacrificial divination, or to his own sense of being elected by Asclepius. On the contrary, according to his treatise about sacrifices, as the philosophers and the Christians do, Lucian denounces pagan religion itself, with its emblematic focus on sacrifice, while he down plays the Greek practice by comparison with barbarian rites. Human sacrifice, which gives an opportunity for discussing sacrifice, is far more important in that literature than was expected
