In Ancient Greece, writing was part of the making of certain ritual objects. The katadesmoi are thin lead tablets engraved with signs and names that were buried after being rolled or folded, or sometimes even pierced with nails. Though usually classified as being magic and related to practices from the Near East, the katadesmoi should be seen as being part of the core of the culture and polytheism of the citystates and as a means for understanding the Greek notions of binding and catching. Taking into account the writing on them leads us to examine the status of this writing which has a performative value, and thus turns its use into a ritual act. This act of writing had a performative value as a ritual act. By analyzing these tablets as speech acts, we come to understand how the powers-that-bind come into action during the making and using of these objects
