The paper reacts against the new idea, that the sacrificial banquet among Romans did not exist as a social issue concerning the whole people, that public banquets were “secular” issues, and that merely the matters of supply, political propaganda, and table-company are the point here. Those who express these ideas (Kajava) make some serious mistakes (cf. Plautus, Pseudolus 325-344; Ammianus 22, 12, 6). In an inscription from Forum Clodii (CIL XI, 3303), we examine the very sacrificial banquet in order to display how the banquet could work in a complex society. It is a matter of fact that the flesh of the victims would easily be enough even for the many; sharing perhaps was of money which permitted the purchase meat at the butcher. We also call back to mind that every Roman banquet, be it sacrificial or not (for Varro divides animals intended for butchering from animals bred for the altar), was staging the sharing with the gods. In any case butchering was a ritual act implying a sharing with the gods, even as a simple matter of food supply
