The eastern coast of Mrica is well known as the terminus of a monsoon trading system that extended across the western Indian Ocean. This trading system, which reached its height in the nineteenth century and still survives today, is widely assumed to have been of great antiquity. Archaeological sites are known along the seaboard, from the coasts ofSomalia to Mozambique, and include the offshore islands ofPemba, Zanzibar, Mafia, the Comoros and Madagascar
