Die Autoren des Buches Die gesellschaftliche Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit (1969), die Soziologen Peter L. Berger (*1927) und Thomas Luckmann (*1929), lernten sich Anfang der 1950er Jahre während ihres Studiums an der Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science der New School of Social Research in New York kennen. Die 1919 von Wissenschaftlern der Columbia University gegründete Einrichtung bot innerhalb der 1933 gegründeten University in Exile vom Nationalsozialismus verfolgten Wissenschaftlern die Gelegenheit, ihre Arbeit fortzusetzen zu können. Dazu gehörten neben anderen Claude Lévi-Strauss, Roman Jakobson, Karl Löwith, Hannah Arendt, Leo Strauss, Alfred Schütz und Aron Gurwitsch, die eine prägende und nachhaltige Wirkung auf das Profil von Forschung und Lehre an der New School hatten
