Une inscription honorifique qui date de la fin du iie siècle apr. J.-C. loue Publius Aelius Damokratidas, un notable de Sparte, à la fois pour ses qualités civiques, pour sa loyauté à l’empereur romain et pour ses succès sportifs, comme l’indique l’expression aristos Hellenôn. Cette combinaison de qualités, quelque peu surprenante, est mon point de départ pour discuter le rôle de l’athlétisme traditionnel dans la construction de l’identité grecque sous l’Empire. Je démontre que les occurrences fréquentes de titres tels que « Le meilleur des Grecs » se comprennent davantage quand on les replace dans le contexte de la romanisation du monde grec. Pour être aristos Hellenôn, il ne fallait pas seulement être un champion, mais aussi se comporter comme un « supporter » de Rome. De fait, l’athlétisme grec était une façon grecque de faire le Romain
