In the eighteenth century, the commercial relationships dominating the slave trade in Mozambique's ports were as much the continuation of ancestral relationships as of those created throughout the century itself. Once the Portuguese were established in India, ships from Portugal bound for India loaded slaves on southeast African coast. Efforts to promote French slave supplies from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic were hindered first by continuing success in slaving in Atlantic Ocean and by the disruptions to French colonial trade in the Americas caused by war with Britain in 1755-1763. In the eighteenth century, slave ships departing from ports of Mozambique headed systematically towards main directions other than India. The first was to French colonies in the Indian Ocean and in the West Indies. The second was to Brazil. Keywords: Atlantic Ocean; French colonies; Mozambique ports; Portuguese; slave trade networks
