This chapter is based on ethnographic fieldwork in and around Bogotá between 1987 and 2003 that consists of participant observation, individual and group interviews, analysis of audiotaped and transcribed conversation between friends and family members, and analysis of organizational documents and media texts. It explains within Bilmes' conceptualization of contradictory cultural norms to describe some politeness phenomena in Colombia as they relate to an ideology of connectedness, a central principle of evaluation of interpersonal interaction that posits persons as sets of bonds to others. The chapter seeks to expand on previous work in Spanish pragmatics particularly that concerned with directives by elaborating some aspects of the cultural system of meaning that underlies the patterns. It outlines the interpersonal ideology of connectedness for which they provide the interactive framework. The chapter discusses dilemmas of politeness that arise from that ideology. It focuses on only two aspects of politeness calculation: power and distance
