In 1893 the chemist and physician Theodor Weyl, working at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg, started a major publication venture. Together with the renowned publisher Gustav Fischer in Jena he announced the launch of a massive handbook project on 'Hygiene'.1 Remarkably, in his preface to the first volume, Weyl above all emphasised the impartiality of his project: 'The Handbuch der Hygiene does not put itself in the service of a particular school or some, even if particularly eminent personalities'.2 He wanted to include all strands of science and welcomed representatives of all different schools as collaborators to the handbook. This impartiality had been achieved, Weyl argued, because the authors were largely recruited from the ranks of architects and engineers not partisan to particular hygienic dogmas.KeywordsEarly 20th CenturySewage SystemGerman CityNatural MonumentWeimar RepublicThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
