Victor Cousin presented his philosophy as an eclecticism, incorporating the best materials from the Scottish empiricism of Reid and Dugald-Stewart, the German Idealism of Kant and Hegel and, the French psychology of Laromiguière and Royer-Collard. In this conception, the figure of Descartes is represented as a nationalist standard and the enduring image of a rationalist engaged in a struggle against all forms of sensualist empiricism - or worse, materialism - and the authority of Catholic theologians. Conversely, this contribution puts forward a very different viewpoint. For, in order to be the king of French philosophy - as Louis Philippe was king of the French - Cousin had, above all, to distinguish himself from another French philosopher, Maine de Biran, and another French historiography, that of Degérando. These are the principal characteristics of the ‘secret dialogue’, as he himself called it, which I propose to study. The results of such a switch in viewpoint are the following: it is this twofold strategy of differentiation that establishes Cousin’s philosophy in the context of French philosophy but prevents it from itself becoming French philosophy - that is, from being transformed from an eclecticism into a genuine spiritualism that recovers the empiricist legacy of the Idéologues
