Au début de son Scythikos logos, Hérodote relate trois légendes différentes concernant l'origine des Scythes. La première de ces légendes est attribuée aux Scythes, la seconde aux Grecs pontiques et la troisième, qu’Hérodote lui-même considère comme la plus probable, est caractérisée comme un récit commun aux Grecs et aux Barbares. Les deux premières versions de l'origine des Scythes sont fort différentes de la troisième. Dans les deux premiers cas, il s'agit de versions purement mythologique
