The chapter provides a survey of the external ecology and of the internal organisation of the French-related creoles of the Indian Ocean. It describes the historical development of Indian Ocean Creoles (IOC) in the Mascarenes (Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues) and the Seychelles archipelagos. Some phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical features of IOC are presented. The paper describes the status and function of IOC in their multilingual settings and their relations to French and English, ex-colonial languages. Issues related to the writing of IOC, to its use in the media and to the introduction of IOC in education in the Republic of Mauritius, in the French département of Réunion and in the Republic of Seychelles are discussed
