This chapter deals with a discussion of future research directions and how the evidence on investment behaviors among immigrant families may challenge prevailing theories of investment behaviors. It describes the behaviors based on inferences from the available evidence. Given the increasing prominence of immigrant families and the many challenges that they and their children face in adapting to American society, it is important to study the pattern of family investments in children among this group of families. The cultural emphasis on family interdependence, along with the very real need for members to assist one another in a new society, could result in investments in their children that reflect the mutual dependence of the goals for their children and the larger family. The generational comparisons suggest that this may be the case, but generational differences are very weak tests of cultural change because they often compare different cohorts who enter the country under very different historical, political, and economic circumstances
