Seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs ist die Bundesrepublik ein Land ständiger Zuwanderung. Dabei ist die Bundesrepublik in Bezug auf die Zuwanderung der Flüchtlinge und Vertriebenen, die bis Ende der 50er Jahre abgeschlossen war, mit klassischen Einwanderungsländern vergleichbar. Eine Besonderheit (gegenüber den klassischen Einwanderungsländern) ist hingegen die Zuwanderung und ständige Präsenz ausländischer Bevölkerungsgruppen: zunächst der Besatzungsstreitkräfte, dann der Gastarbeiter und schließlich der Asylsuchenden, die alle zumindest politisch nicht als Einwanderer definiert wurden und deshalb ganz überwiegend ihre Nationalität behalten haben
