I speak here as a political economist in the hope of establishing an intellectual dialogue on the subject of race, gender and representation in the city. I begin with the facts and narratives about the economy of the city and move towards an attempt at theorizing the presences that are not represented in these accounts. In this attempt at theorizing I make use of elements from critical theory in feminism, art and architecture. I take liberties, because my intention is to use these elements to illuminate subjects and arenas which they have not addressed and are not meant to: the multiple presences and articulations of race and gender in the urban economy and their multiple absences in the dominant representations of that economy
