The Amazon in the Andean Region has a privileged position from a geopolitical point of view: an enormous number of strategic resources, as well as a vast territory that may have a relevant impact on its region countries’ national economies. Such territory, nonetheless, has been pursued and affected by illegal actors that historically have been linked to violent actions to channel their interests. This chapter approaches the Andean Amazon region from a historical and structural point of view, considering the main tensions that have risen and that provide evidence of the regions high value for states as well as for ICO. The current security scenarios, the nature of the threats as well as the void in strategic thought in Ecuador’s institutions highlights the need to enhance the security capabilities and the need to strengthen the overall state’s presence. A joint regional strategy is key to channel common responses to these problems
