Telugu women, who were already active in the religious affairs of their communities, carried over their traditional cultic leadership roles into the new religion. The office of Biblewoman, which Protestant missionaries imported from Britain, offered them opportunities for their service and authority. A series of Dalit conversions to Christianity, the feminization of the Protestant missions, and changes in cultural landscape of Telugu society in the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century together shaped how the profession evolved in the Northern Circars. In this chapter, I will analyze the process of appropriation of the office in the region, especially in regard to its practices and features.KeywordsSingle WomanNative WomanMission SchoolBiblical StoryBible ReaderThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
