In his PhD thesis (The Classical Trivium 1943), the philosopher of communication theory Marshall McLuhan addressed the western rhetorical tradition over the longue durée. He claimed that, instead of being ‘reborn’ in the Renaissance, rhetoric was a lasting feature of medieval scholarship. Drawing on this research I present, by contrast, the scholasticism of the 13th century as an anti-rhetorical moment and, thus, as a parenthesis in the history of medieval philosophy. I address the rejection of eloquence and rhetoric in the 13th century by investigating three of its cultural conditions: the strategic role played by the recently established universities, the imperialist dominance of literate culture within the field of philosophy, and the hierarchical dogma of scholastic Latin as the scientific language par excellence
