This paper deals with a collection of documents, some of them unpublished (correspondence, original travel journals, drawings), that shed light on the discovery of the site of the Greek city of Messene by the Abbé Fourmont in 1730. We discuss the problems raised by the low reliability of Fourmont’s successive descriptions. These documents are re-contextualized in the history of the first explorations on the Messene site, in particular regarding the defensive wall and its state of conservation between the 18th and the early 19th century
