In the introduction to the German translation of Jan Baptista van Helmont’s (1579- 1644) originally Latin Ortus medicinae [The Rise of Medicine], the translator Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (1636-1689) explains that his chief aim was to make the text understandable to the reader.
