This chapter outlines the questions explored in this study and explains why they are important to understanding the nature of corporate leadership in the 21st century. It explains the approach taken and the structure of this book. Chapter 2 provides theoretical background for understanding issues surrounding board gender diversity and surveys a growing body of literature on the topic. Chapter 3 then sets the stage using global quantitative data to provide a global-level analysis of factors shaping corporate board diversity in jurisdictions around the world. Chapters 4 and 5 take a closer look at corporate governance and gender diversity on company boards in China and India. Chapter 6 zooms in even further to explore individual beliefs and understandings of board gender diversity amongst business leaders in China and India. Finally, Chapter 7 bridges the gap between theory, data, and boardroom experience, through narratives of women leaders and board members
