With a few notable exceptions (Bousquet, 1996; Nesson et al., 1973; Trousset, 1986), the archaeology and long-term history of the Saharan oases remain poorly documented. In many cases, pioneer studies have not been followed up in recent decades (Ball and Beadnell, 1903; Fakhry, 1974; RSGI, 1937; Scarin, 1934, 1937). Yet, there is undoubtedly much to learn from the manner in which desert people have exploited resources and mastered the limitations of their environment. A better understanding of human adaptation to the desert environment has clear relevance for modern concerns about the sustainability of oasis farming
