In order to glean the specificities of African tourism, this chapter looks at the theoretical approaches in tourism studies, and then approaches the characteristics of the African scene. A theoretical approach of the 'host' side of the tourist equation can be embedded in a more general theory of cultural change, globalization/localization and internal cultural dynamics. The development of anthropological approaches is especially interesting when viewed by the various editions of the most seminal of all collections on anthropological studies of tourism, i.e. 'Host and Guests'. In order to develop general insights about the interchanges between 'hosts' and 'guests', the specific character of specifically African tourism is viewed. These characteristics are viewed in the form of paradoxes and contradictions. Keywords: African tourism; globalization; theory of cultural change; tourism studies
