We Are Sexual Too

Forming intimate relationships, exploring one’s sexuality and having sexual experiences are often markers of the transition between childhood and adulthood. During adolescent and early adulthood years, young people usually start their process of sexual exploration. Due to protectionism and forms of social control, disabled youth, however, often encounter unique barriers to experiencing those milestones. This chapter addresses some of the barriers that keep disabled youth from engaging in forms of sexual expression and developing their own sense of gender and sexual identities. At the same time, this chapter also highlights the importance of engaging with disabled youth as co-researchers and acknowledges the creative ways disabled youth are pushing back against those barriers to sexual expression
