The principal objects of archaeological study are the remains of past material culture, people and places. In the last decade, many theorists have identified a more active contri bution to the creation of culture from objects, bodies, and sites. Lubar has claimed that objects are not passive intermediaries but agents, always creating the world anew (Lubar 1993: 197). Meskell (1996: 7) proposes that lived and corporeal bodies are vital to the construction of individual identities and criticizes Barrett, Shanks, Tilley and Thomas for treating archaeological bodies as passive reflectors of large-scale processes, as mere scenes of display, whether in posture, gesture, costume or sexuality. Barrett (1988: 6) argues that locales (his term for ‘places’) play an important role in structuring action as well as being structured by action. All of these views share the same concern with the active role, with social action and therefore with agency (see also Barrett, this volume)
