The Catholic enlightenment in Portugal is commonly thought of as a phenomenon that gained momentum in the second half of the 18th century. This chapter focuses on an examination of certain events which occurred beginning in the 1740s. It discusses the milestone in the history of Portuguese enlightened Catholicism represented by the publication of O Verdadeiro Mtodo de Estudar . Going beyond the general traits of Catholic enlightenmentbound to a certain rationality and to the renewal of study methodswe move on to the specific characteristics related to the region and the period of the phenomenon. In this regard, it is fair to say that anti-Jesuitism, anti-ultramontanism, anti-scholasticism and anti-probabilism are predominant characteristics of the Portuguese Catholic enlightenment from the late 1750s onward. Keywords: anti-Jesuitism; anti-probabilism; anti-scholasticism; anti-ultramontanism; Catecismo de Montpellier ; Catholic Enlightenment; Portugal
