Mali's National Museum had its origins in 1953 as the colonial museum, Le Musée Soudanais, an archaeological and ethnographic museum. At independence in 1960 Mali nationalized the colonial museum and charged it with collecting, conserving and protecting cultural objects and engaging in heritage education. This essay identifies the ways that the museum's collecting policies and its exhibitions and educational programs have evolved over time and have contributed to Mali's national goal to decolonize its cultural and educational institutions. It focuses on the museum's past and current efforts at home and abroad to protect Mali's cultural heritage and the role that the museum now plays in the current dialogues concerning the restitution of cultural objects to Africa
