This chapter seeks to analyse the book trade that flourished in Rio de Janeiro between 1808 and 1831 by examining the advertisements in periodicals such as Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro, Diario do Rio de Janeiro, and Jornal do Commercio. It seeks to show that books, bookstores, and printing houses can present diverse avenues for historical research, resulting in a novel approach to the cultural and political practices of the early 1800s, as well as making it possible to determine how new ideas originating in European countries, particularly Portugal and France, became widespread in the Court. This view is predicated on the assumption that the history of books can be equated with investigating the meaning of messages conveyed by the written word, since books can turn into a privileged means 'of entering into a dialogue with the past, of creation and innovation'
