Since the first translation of Hamlet into Danish and the first performance of the play at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in the early nineteenth century, the play about the melancholy and indecisive Dane has always had a very special position among Shakespeare’s plays in Denmark. Generations of Danes have seen themselves or their countrymen in the character of Hamlet. In the 1930s two major Danish writers turned their attention to Shakespeare’s Danish play. In quite different ways they found Hamlet relevant to the political situation in Europe at the time, and used the play in their wish to comment on that situation
