Capitalism—the dominant mode of accumulation in the world economy—shows a persistent tendency toward the concentration of production. Despite characteristic unevenness in this expansion of the forces of production, there has been a long-run tendency for the center of the system to be in North America and Western Europe. It is only relatively recently that the Far East has begun to emerge as another central node of accumulation
