On 4 May 1997, together with a small group of friends I hosted a street party to celebrate the Labour victory in the election. Gordon Brown and many other prospective members of the new government were there. Tony Blair didn’t come, pleading exhaustion after the tension of the preceding few days. It wasn’t like the flag- waving episode that was to happen later when the Blairs moved into No. 10. The mode was one of quiet satisfaction, at a job well done; most were already starting to think about the problems that would have to be confronted over the next weeks and months
