Pompey is a major figure for Cassius Dio. In the imperial period he was remembered as one of the founders of the empire, and Dio presents him as a critical figure in the period of dynasteia that preceded the monarchy of Augustus, some elements of which are prefigured by Pompey’s position after 67 BCE. Dio’s Pompey is victimized by his own moderation in refusing to seize power after his return to Italy following his victory over Mithridates in 62 BCE. As Pompey’s previous collaboration with Caesar is undone by his jealousy at Caesar’s success, Pompey is drawn into alliance with Caesar’s enemies and destroyed. Although heavily influenced by a wide range of histories of the late Republic, in Latin, Dio’s portrait of Pompey is very much his own as he underscored turning points in the career through the use of a variety of his preferred narrative tropes
