Postcolonial studies of diaspora have tended to privilege literary genres, or have often evaded the question of genre entirely. Anglophone scholarship has only recently attended to visual works emerging from primarily British diasporic contexts (See Hall 1990; Lloyd 2001; Mercer 1994; Mirzoeff 2001). However, Francophone postcolonial studies — despite an emerging interest in film — reveals a marked absence of criticism focusing on the visual arts.1 This chapter aims to address this absence by comparing work in different visual genres by artists living in French diasporic contexts
