L’éloge d’Alexandrie prononcé par le dieu Sarapis, dans le récit de la fondation de la ville par le Pseudo-Callisthène, et le discours En l’honneur de Rome d’Aelius Aristide, présentent des similitudes thématiques qui créent un véritable effet de miroir entre ces deux textes. Mais tandis qu’Aristide utilise le vocabulaire de la cité grecque pour décrire l’empire romain, le Pseudo-Callisthène valorise, face à Rome, un hellénisme intégrant tout un héritage non grec. Les deux textes opposent non pas une vision romaine à une vision grecque, mais deux façons de faire le Grec dans l’empire romain, en quelque sorte à fronts renversés
