The jan sunwai [public hearing] is a new, highly original and increasingly popular form of collective action in today’s India. Being essentially confrontational and dealing mostly with vital issues such as access to work, education and healthcare, the jan sunwai is a participatory dispositive that is characterised by a strong emotional intensity. Focusing on a specific jan sunwai organised in Delhi in 2011, this chapter demonstrates that a situational analysis of the emotional dynamics characterising this dispositive offers crucial insights into its political efficacy. Such emotional dynamics result both from the ‘emotion work’ carried out by skilled mobilisation entrepreneurs as well as from the less controlled ‘work of emotions’ expressed by the different categories of participants. Combining these two perspectives allows us to understand the transformative potential of the jan sunwai, its originality as well as its limitations
