The maps presented here,1 with a brief commentary, give a series of profiles of the social and economic geography of the Third World. This 'immense community of newly or imminently independent nations' forms the third element in a world power structure dominated up to the present by the technologically more advanced nations of the Atlantic bloc or the European Communist bloc. Its muted or passive role in world affairs has been due to its technological backwardness, and to the colonial control, overt or concealed, which was both a cause and a consequence of this backwardness. This passive role is increasingly a thing of the past for, among at least the elites of the Third World, there is an emerging and increasingly focused awareness of their potential strength. This awareness is not entirely the product of an opportunism which has flourished in the genial climate provided by the manœuvres of two opposing power blocs, each desperately striving to win friends and influence nations; it is ultimately much more solidly based. For two out of every three men on our globe are citizens of a Third World country (and by the end of the century it will be three out of every four) and these countries, in spite of present poverty, have a rich resource endowment.KeywordsCapita IncomeWorld CountryUnderdeveloped CountryTertiary SectorWorld AffairThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
