This chapter provides an overview of the research on those aspects of spatial identities that are pertinent to the discipline of geography. It describes the recognition of several simultaneous identity discourses, which emphasize different sides of the social construction of identity as related to social spatiality. The chapter discusses the construction of places, regions and nations as centers for territorial identity. It focuses on how geography, as a scientific institution, has contributed to the construction of spatial identities and spatial imaginations. The chapter looks at geography as location and/or context manifesting itself in the negotiation of spatial identities. It shows that how 'geography' is both used and created by the proponents of regional administrative reform in Finland. If identities are 'language dependent', how, then, should we understand their relation to space? To identify regions legitimately, the governmental discourse has resorted to an evolutionary conception of space
