Der Beitrag möchte eingehend erstens das Entstehen der Netzwerkforschung akademisch nachzeichnen und die wissenschaftstheoretischen Koordinaten der akademischen Spezialisierung und entsprechenden Themenstellungen rekonstruieren, wobei auch auf die speziellen Entwicklungen der Wirtschaftssoziologie, insbesondere der neueren amerikanischen Wirtschaftssoziologie eingegangen wird. Der Beitrag möchte zweitens darstellen, welche unterschiedlichen Phasen der akademischen Netzwerkbehandlung anzutreffen und unterscheidbar sind, und diskutieren, ob akademische Netzwerktheorie primär stärker als eine neue soziologische Theorie aufzufassen ist oder ob sie eine sozialwissenschaftliche Methode darstellt und ob Netzwerkforschung insofern ein neues Paradigma abbildet. Eine der von uns vertretenen Thesen lautet, dass gerade die Netzwerkforschung ein Potential anbietet, das die wechselseitigen Limitationen der Fächer tendenziell zu überwinden verspricht und das die bisherige sterile Binarität von Mikro- und Makrosemantiken innovativer zu gestalten verspricht
