Britain has provided one of the richest records of human occupation in Europe for Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 11 with a wealth of sites, artefact assemblages and evidence of other non-lithic technologies. The lower assemblages of Phase I at Swanscombe together with Southfleet Road provide the strongest evidence of populations deploying a simple technology without habitual handaxe use. The different scales of understanding are from the European to the local, at which we might be able to identify human use of familiar landscapes, which are sometimes persistent through time. The lithic assemblages come from the Freshwater Bed and can probably be assigned to HoIIb-HoIIc. They are all made on flint from the river gravel and consist of simple cores, flakes and flake tools. East Farm, Barnham has been known since the late nineteenth century with excavations in the 1930s. The site has a remarkably similar sequence to Barnham, consisting of a basin filled with silts and clays that cuts into Anglian till
