There has been both certainty and uncertainty in the Philippines for some considerable time: notably, during the election period, during the Marcos regime and, of course, earlier than that. The certainties range from the corrupt, cruel and oppressive nature of the Marcos administration; to the increasing poverty and unrest of the people; to the continuing strength of the institutional church, sadly disappointing in its overall effectiveness; to the determination of the USA to maintain its defence and economic interests at any cost. The uncertainties have included information about possible successors to Marcos — from within his own party or from the opposition; the question of the re-imposition of martial law; the manner in which the army would react when Marcos died, quit or was overthrown; the timing of the revolution; the extent of direct US military involvement in the face of a threat to their bases
