This chapter considers the distinctive themes and methods of Nietzsche’s The Gay Science (1882/1887). I begin by considering Nietzsche’s notion of gay science itself – a paradoxical notion since gaiety would seem to be incompatible with the rigor, focus, and precision characteristic of scientific activity. I argue that Nietzsche intends to show through the diverse styles and lighthearted attitude of The Gay Science that gaiety is not just compatible with scientific aspirations but essential to the philosopher’s task. This result provides a starting point for brief commentaries on each of the five books of The Gay Science. Topics considered include our human tendency to misunderstand ourselves; Nietzsche’s high esteem for the arts; the role of art in philosophical activity and in life more generally; Nietzsche’s announcement of the death of God (which is quite different from simple atheism); the idea of the eternal recurrence; and the value and methods of pursuing the truth
