Self-help was born out of need. The way that racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, and heterosexism have influenced our lives creates interlocking systems of oppression that affect us. Because of the history of colonization and erasure, women of color are not often found authoring history texts about participation in the reproductive rights movement. Sophia Smith Collection (SSC) launched the Voices of Feminism Project in 2002 with support from Wilma Mankiller, Gloria Steinem, and the Ford Foundation to preserve oral histories of approximately fifty women who have made important contributions to the feminist movement.
