Tracing historically the interrelated themes of Islam, the state, and community—three central strands in North African history—is a formidable intellectual challenge. The researcher is confronted with an ever-elusive kaleidoscope of Islamic dimensions (faith, values, ritual, practice, law, brotherhood, mysticism), and of state dimensions (boundaries, institutions, resources, norms, identities). These overlapping and shifting images defy attempts to identify and to analyze structural and historical patterns
