It is clear that the difficulty for spatial systems – including spatial networks – is to go beyond local measures and characterization. This is a very general problem which finds its root in the existence of spatial correlations between the elements of the system. Simple correlation measures can be helpful, but it is desirable to be able to have a global characterization of a spatial setting. In this chapter, we will present different approaches that can help for characterizing a system of points in the plane, that are not only based on spatial networks but that could also be applied to spatial networks. We will start with the problem of points that carry an information. In the case where nodes represent cities for example, this extra information could be the population. The location of a city is of primary importance but we understand here that it makes a difference if the city is very large or not. We will thus start this chapter by approaches that deal with these marked systems (the mark being an information attached to the node)
