The Heroides have been Ovid's most influential work from antiquity until very recent times. The originality of the Heroides consists primarily in the combination of features from other literary forms, and in this respect they may represent the most interesting example in Roman poetry of innovation in genre. The finished product is a fascinating portrait of the lyric poet in elegiac mode, but the effect is very different from the other poems in the Heroides . In many respects the paired epistles (16-21) represent a logical extension of the underlying conceit of the single epistles. When one considers the broad sweep of the narrative settings of the Heroides , the consistency with Ovid's amatory elegies in style, diction, and theme is remarkable. Ovid's innovative reformulation of the heroines' voices in the Heroides provides the reader with a unique perspective on his reading of the Greek and Roman traditions of narrative verse. Keywords: amatory elegies; Heroides ; Ovid; paired epistles; Roman poetry; single epistles
