The first part of this chapter examines the pattern of colonial economic and political repression in St Vincent and illustrates what may be called the transition from ‘coercive’ to ‘incorporative’ policies. These changes have involved the handing over of political and economic control to a local populist and middle-class elite, a change from colonial political domination to economic dependence on the metropolis and a greatly expanded role for the state
