it is a commonplace that the VOC, or Dutch East India Company, reduced the Estado da India Oriental to a minor entity between 1602, the year of its formation, and 1661, but it is surprising that neither Dutch nor Portuguese historians have taken an especially close look at precisely how this rivalry began and what strategic pattern the Dutch attackers followed
