This chapter begins with an overview of the climate system and then provides spatial maps of seasonal temperature, precipitation, and drought for the central and eastern Mediterranean covering the past 70 years. We then present the basic concepts of palaeoclimatology, i.e. how to derive quantitative climate information from documentary and natural proxies for the pre-instrumental period. We discuss the availability, distribution, potential, and limitations of existing palaeoclimatic data from the central and eastern Mediterranean with emphasis on the Byzantine era (AD 300–1500). We then present new evidence and a better understanding of temperature variability across the central and eastern Mediterranean and show locations of proxies that represent the hydroclimate across the Eastern Mediterranean
