This chapter examines the interplay of the traza or foundational plan for Lima’s urban grid based on Spanish colonial traditions with the actual development of the city. It considers the relationship between urban planning and the everyday practicalities of urban life through examination of the public spaces (the Plaza Mayor and other minor plazas) and the municipal drinking water pipeline network. These case studies are developed using archival sources, primarily the Libros de Cabildo de Lima, as well as other early accounts of the city. Throughout, a spatial approach is emphasized to explain how the establishment of Spanish colonial Lima forged new relationships with the landscape, showing significant divergence from precolonial settlement patterns. This new relationship implied challenges, opportunities, and risks, and is best visualized through analysis of the planned traza in relation to the reality of Lima’s urban development
